About this tool
Order of operations: why 2+3×4 is 14
This calculator works like the one on your phone and like a spreadsheet: multiplication and division are done before addition and subtraction. Typing 2 + 3 × 4 gives 14, not 20.
The full expression stays visible on the small line above the result, so you can check what you typed before pressing =. If you want a different order, do it in two steps: 2 + 3 = then × 4 =.
How the % key works
- After + or −, % means “percent of the number before”: 200 + 10% = 220 and 200 − 10% = 180. Handy for tax, tips and discounts.
- After × or ÷, or on its own, % simply divides by 100: 200 × 10% = 20 and 50% = 0.5.
- Pressing = again repeats the last step: 200 + 10% = 220, then = gives 240.
History, copy and keyboard
The last 20 calculations are listed under the keypad. Tap one to put its result back in as the current number. The list lives only in this tab and disappears when you close it.
Copy puts exactly the number shown on the display on your clipboard. On a computer you can type with the keyboard: digits, + − * /, % , Enter or = for the result, Backspace to delete a digit and Esc to clear everything.
Decimals and 15-digit precision
Computers store numbers in binary, which is why many calculators show 0.1 + 0.2 as 0.30000000000000004. This calculator rounds the result to 15 significant digits, so you see 0.3.
Very large or very small results switch to scientific notation, for example 1e-10. Dividing by zero shows a clear message instead of a strange number; press any digit or C to continue.
