About this tool

What a public IP address is

Every device on the internet is reached through an IP address. At home, your router or phone network shares one public address among all your devices, and websites see that public address — the one shown above — not the private address (such as 192.168.0.10) inside your network.

Your public address usually belongs to your internet provider and can change when the router restarts, when you switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data, or when you turn on a VPN.

IPv4 and IPv6

  • IPv4 addresses look like 203.0.113.45: four numbers from 0 to 255.
  • IPv6 addresses look like 2001:db8:85a3::8a2e:370:7334 and are much longer, because the world ran out of IPv4 addresses.
  • Many networks are dual-stack: your browser prefers IPv6 when the site supports it, so a site that only speaks IPv4 may see a different address for you.

How accurate is the location?

Location from an IP address comes from databases that map address blocks to the region where the provider registered them. It is often right about the country, sometimes about the city, and almost never about your street. Mobile networks and VPNs can place you hundreds of kilometres away.

The provider (ISP) and ASN identify the network that owns the address. They are useful when a support desk or game server asks which network you are on.

Privacy: what we do with your IP

Your browser must contact a server to learn its public address, so this page makes one request to our Cloudflare Worker, which simply echoes the address it sees back to you. We do not store or log it, and it is not shared with advertisers.

The browser details at the bottom (browser, operating system, language, screen, time zone) are read on your device and are not sent anywhere.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my IP different from the one in my computer’s network settings?

Your computer shows its private address inside your home or office network. Websites see the public address of your router or provider, which is what this page shows.

Does my IP address change?

Often, yes. Most home and mobile connections get a dynamic address that can change after a router restart or when you move between networks. Some business lines have a fixed (static) address.

Can someone find my home from my IP?

Not from the IP alone. Public databases only show the provider and a rough region. Only your provider can link an address to a customer, and it does so only under legal process.

How do I check that my VPN works?

Note the address shown here, connect the VPN and press Refresh. If the address and provider change to the VPN’s, your traffic goes through the VPN.

Why does it show IPv6 and not IPv4?

Your network and browser support IPv6, so it is used first. Your IPv4 address still exists for sites that only support IPv4; it may be different.
