    How to use

    1. 1Choose DEG or RAD for angles.
    2. 2Build the expression with the function keys, numbers and brackets.
    3. 3Press = to evaluate. ANS reuses the last result.

    About this tool

    DEG or RAD?

Trigonometric functions need to know the unit of the angle. In DEG mode sin(30) = 0.5 and asin(1) = 90; in RAD mode sin(π/6) = 0.5. School geometry usually uses degrees, while calculus and physics formulas usually use radians.

The current mode is shown in the display and is remembered on this device. Values such as sin(180) or cos(90) are shown as exactly 0 rather than a tiny rounding error, and tan(90°) is reported as not defined.

    Why −2^2 is −4 and 2^3^2 is 512

    • Powers are evaluated before the minus sign in front of them, so −2^2 = −(2^2) = −4. Type (−2)^2 to get 4.
    • Powers group from right to left: 2^3^2 = 2^(3^2) = 2^9 = 512.
    • A number directly before a bracket, π, e, a function or √ means multiplication: 2π, 2(−3) and 2√9 = 6.
    • EXP enters powers of ten: 2 EXP 3 is 2×10³ = 2000.

    Square roots and n-th roots

√ takes the square root of what follows: √9 = 3. For other roots use ⁿ√ with the index first: press 3, ⁿ√, 27 to get the cube root of 27, which is 3. Odd roots of negative numbers work (3 ⁿ√ −8 = −2); even roots of negative numbers are not defined.

    Factorials, large numbers and ANS

n! is defined for whole numbers from 0 to 170. 170! is about 7.25741561530799e+306, the largest factorial a standard double-precision number can hold; 171! is reported as too large.

ANS is the result of the last successful calculation (0 at first). An error leaves it unchanged, so you can fix the expression and continue.

    Frequently asked questions

    Why is sin(30) not 0.5?

You are probably in RAD mode, where 30 means 30 radians. Switch to DEG to work in degrees.

How do I calculate a cube root?

    Press 3, then ⁿ√, then the number. For example 3 ⁿ√ 27 = 3. For a square root use √ directly.

    What does ANS do?

ANS inserts the result of your last calculation, so you can chain steps such as ANS × 2.

Why does 2.5! show an error?

The factorial key works on whole numbers from 0 to 170 only. Non-integers and negative numbers are not defined here.

    Does it work offline?

Yes. Once the page has loaded, all calculations run in your browser without a network connection.
