Troubleshooting guide

What the webcam test shows

  • Live preview — confirms the camera turns on and the picture is in focus.
  • Resolution — what your camera is actually delivering right now, plus the maximum it reports supporting.
  • Frame rate (FPS) — measured from real frames. 30 fps looks smooth; below 15 fps looks choppy.
  • Brightness — a quick check for a covered lens or a very dark room.

Camera not working? Check these in order

  1. Privacy shutter: many laptops and webcams have a sliding cover or a camera on/off key (often an F-key with a camera icon).
  2. Browser permission: click the camera icon in the address bar and choose “Allow”, then reload.
  3. Other apps: only one app can use the camera at a time on some systems. Close Zoom, Teams, OBS, Discord and the Camera app.
  4. Connection: for USB webcams, plug directly into the computer and avoid long extension cables.
  5. Right device: if you have several cameras, pick the right one from the “Camera” menu after starting.
  6. Restart the computer — it often fixes a stuck camera driver.

Windows 10 / 11

  • Settings → Privacy & security → Camera: turn on “Camera access” and “Let desktop apps access your camera”.
  • Device Manager → Cameras: if your webcam shows a warning, right-click → Update driver, or uninstall it and restart.

macOS

  • System Settings → Privacy & Security → Camera: allow your browser, then restart the browser.

Improving a dark or choppy picture

Webcams lower their frame rate automatically in dim light, so lighting fixes both brightness and smoothness. Face a window or put a lamp behind your screen, not behind you. Clean the lens with a soft cloth. Close heavy apps and browser tabs, and use a USB 3 port for HD webcams.

Your privacy

The video never leaves your device. Photos you take are created in your browser and saved only if you click “Save photo”. Nothing is uploaded or stored on our side.

Frequently asked questions

Is this webcam test safe?

Yes. It runs in your browser, nothing is recorded or uploaded, and the camera turns off when you press Stop or leave the page.

Why is my 1080p webcam showing 720p?

Some webcams only deliver full resolution at lower frame rates, over USB 3, or in specific apps. Check the “Max supported” value and the camera’s software.

Why is the picture mirrored?

Preview is mirrored by default because it feels natural, like a mirror. Others in a video call see you un-mirrored. Untick “Mirror” to see the true image.

Does it work on phones?

Yes. Mobile browsers usually list front and back cameras in the Camera menu.
